Thanksgiving

I wanted to send lots of love to the everyone at this holiday time!  Hope you all had as wonderful of a Thanksgiving as my family did.  We spent the time with some great friends and neighbors.  Lots of delicious food, laughter and love.  A cold front moved in during the afternoon, dropping the temps from 80 to below 60 in about an hour.  But the fire kept us all warm and cozy as we “porched it” for meal time.  My favorite time of year is here once again…I love the holidays!

Now on to the handmade gifts I am making for everyone, decorating for Winter, covering plants (hard freeze hitting tonight), and making sure the firewood is stacked by the fire pit in the front.  And the only things I bought today on “Black Friday” were food for the family so I now have the entire weekend to just kick back, munch on leftovers and know that the pantry is full for the next couple weeks at least.  Time to work on gifts, cookie making and all the good stuff that comes with this time of year.

Hope you all are enjoying your weekend!!  Much love and as always, lots of Peace!

The following photos are pre-meal yesterday.  We were having so much fun I didn’t take one picture during the gathering!  Silly me…but here is how it looked when everyone got here.  Enjoy!

Trick or Treat!

Another Halloween under our belts. Lola declared it the best one yet! We went trick or treating with in a really cool neighborhood out here. Lola and her friends got to go further than the smaller kids, and she ran into several others from school. I love seeing that independence in her grow. It’s a bittersweet transition that is happening right now. In so many ways she is trying to spread her wings and fly a little further, but she always is up for a cuddle and to just be a little girl once again. So being able to go off with her friends and their parents, while I stayed behind with the younger ones, was a huge deal to her. It was so great to see her run back to me after over an hour away, and excitedly hug me and tell me all the things she saw on her “journey”. The friends in their costumes, the scary houses, and the simple fact that she was trusted to do this without me. Yes, there were other adults with her and her pals, but they were not “mom”.

While all this excitement was going on, Xi and her little friends were experiencing a sense of “big girlness” themselves! There is one house on this particular street we go to every year, that the owners dress up to look like a haunted house. Flashing lights in the windows, scary arbor with spider webs and bats to walk through, eerie music and sound effects…all the things that make little girls shake in their princess shoes. The years prior, there was no way Xi or her friends were going anywhere near that house. We’d give it plenty of room even while just walking past. But this year, oh this year was going to be different! As we approached the house, I was prepared to make the wide semi-circle into the street giving us plenty of clearance. As I started to veer to my right a bit, the girls stopped me and with brave faces declared this was the year they were going to trick or treat that house! Apparently they’ve been discussing it. I had one of my little ones I watch during the day with me, and since she is only 3 she was not ready to make the trek up there, so Xi and Shelby were on their own. They clasped hands, held their pillowcases tightly and slowly made their way up the driveway. They hesitated at the entrance to the arbor, discussing their exit strategy I imagined if things got too intense. They literally gave each other a nod, and still holding hands, bravely walked through the arbor, past the fake cemetary, and up to the door where a witch was handing out the goodies. On their return, they too ran up to me with arms opened wide and declared, “We did it!!!!” Their beaming faces said it all, they’d conquered a fear and did it without any help! After that, they went through that arbor another 5 or 6 times before they were ready to move on. (They didn’t keep trick or treating the house, just wanted to prove they could make it through again and again.)

So Halloween night was a night where I watched my youngest darlings grow a bit more. A little bit more of their babiness was gone, a little more maturity was found and a few tears filled my eyes I must say. Tears made of pride, of joy and yes, of a little meloncholy that I was watching them literally let go a bit more.

Afterwards, they came home and went through all their loot. Being the girls they are, they promptly decided which of it they would keep and which would be sent away. I do admit I allow a treat now and then for them that isn’t always from the organic variety. But I am seeing that they know what they can handle and what they can’t. The next day, Lola let me know that she had thrown away most of her candy and really only kept the gum..haha! Good girl! And it didn’t spoil the fun she had, so all is happy. Xiola can’t wait until next year and is already trying to decide what her costume will be.

Life goes by fast. I am very grateful to have this time and to be making these memories. Life is good….

Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween! Now on to my favorite time of year..heheh Click clack are the sound my needles are making! Peace!

Photos

Here are a few photos of life here on the farm.  It’s Friday again….can’t believe that it’s been 2 weeks since my last post!  Life has been busy.  We are enjoying the lovely Fall weather that finally struck us this week!  Pumpkins have been carved with two more waiting for tomorrow to be made into masterpieces of one sort or another.  The porch is cleared of car projects and scrubbed.  Candle holders are cradling fresh wax for the porch nights by firelight, and we’ve lit the chiminaya a couple times already…the beginning of my favorite time of year.

Life continues to move forward, and right now life is very nice indeed.  Lots of laughter has been heard, good food is being eaten (Xi has taken a keen interest in Julia Childs, so we have been reading about her and even made her Potage Parmentier soup the other night), and continued love and support amongst our community here.  Life is happy, things are good.

I hope you all have a wonderfully scary Halloween weekend full of laughter, love and treats!  Peace!

Before
After!

Neglectful Me

I would like to apologize to all my blogger friends for two things.  The first being my lack of response to your posts.  I assure you, I am reading..however my days have gotten busier with the gorgeous little 3 year olds I watch (and a couple 2 year olds scattered in there who are equally as precious!), along with family life!  These days, I barely have time to breath.  But your words, your photos and your constant inspiration makes me smile, even if I am not acknowledging it!  So Thank You for allowing me glimpses of your worlds through your own blogs.  I truly love all of them!

The second apology is my inconsistent posting here!  For the very same reasons mentioned above, I am a blogger slacker the last few weeks!  So I will try to make more of an effort because really there is alot going on and alot I could write about!  The routines are being established and I think we are finally settling down into them.  So hopefully I will be able to carve out a few moments each week to show you the changes, the fun and the boring that goes on around here.  Ha ha!  Bear with me.

I will have a full update in the next couple days.  Perhaps a pictorial update is in order as there is alot!  I didn’t post the fun pics of our 5 year old’s party; the excitement of pulling an engine from the ’65 Chevy; the garden growing strong and proud; soccer games; and all the crafting that has been going on.  So I owe you a lovely post full of visions.

For now, I will leave you to rest peacefully with your dreams.  Thank you my friends…I owe a very high number of smiles to you all!

Peace!

Vegetable Garden

We got some starts planted this weekend – broccoli, leeks and more lettuce.  I love working in the garden with the girls.  Lola is very enthusiastic to start, but then her interest wanes significantly after about 15 minutes and she’s on to the next thing..haha!  Xiola, however, is my gardener.  She says she loves to get her hands dirty and is quickly learning more and more about the plants she puts in the ground.  She is very tender about it too, talking to them and making sure they are standing up just right; the roots are placed in the dirt just so; and the earth is moved gently back into place before patting it all down.  She checks her plantings everyday and reports on the changes she sees.  Sunday she noticed the small potatoes she planted were sprouting up through the soil, and the beans she helped cage up were climbing higher and higher.  She notices every new flower that emerges and is quickly figuring out which is a weed and which is not.  She loves every moment of it from the dirty digging to the harvest.

Lola completely appreciates where it all comes from, but enjoys taking care of the animals more than actual gardening.  She gathers eggs, helps put chickens to bed for the night, feeds goats and ferrets, and is able to handle them all on her own when needed.  She has a wonderful understanding of their personalities and what may or may not be going on in their animal minds.  And she’s not afraid.  When Mongo got a little rough in his play with her and accidently got her with a horn, she came up and let me know, then went back down and didn’t flinch a bit about him being out.  She got right back on the horse, so to speak.  Hah!   She loves having gardens around her, and does understand alot more than average about them for her age, but really isn’t a fan of the actual work involved.  Her dream is to have a huge farm full of animals….she said her husband can grow the plants.  Hah!

I feel very fortunate that we are able to provide this environment for our kids.  They are learning so much about life and where their food comes from.  They understand our desire for organic living and how poisons change the nutritional values of our food and health of ourselves and our animals.  The understand that sometimes a chicken dies, and how baby goats are born, and patience is needed while waiting for beans to flower and make pods.  They play outside more than in, finding simple objects to turn into complicated play.  They teach their friends about it all too.  Sometimes, in today’s economy especially, it’s a struggle to make ends meet each month…but I will not complain because I feel like we landed in just the right place, on just the right property at just the right time.  The gods have blessed us and today I feel very fortunate and grateful.

I hope you all are having a wonderful week.  This amazing weather makes everything possible!

Peace!

{This Moment} Sister Love

(Yes, we went with an all around, bad for you cake for her actual birthday.  Once a year you have to be flexible…haha)

A single photo – no words (okay, sometimes a couple words) – capturing a single moment in the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. If you’re inspired to do the same, leave a link to your ‘moment’ in the comments for all to find and see.  And to see where this all started, visit Soulemama.

Happy Birthday Xiola!

Our baby is 5 today.  Where did the time go?!  It seems like just yesterday she was born in that old rambling farmhouse, the dining room to be exact.  Yes, she was a homebirth baby, born in water with her family surrounding her.  She was amazing!  She has been our snuggly, cuddly girl ever since.  She loved being carried, and we found it so much easier to use baby carriers and slings, that we never used a stroller with her.  I do believe she’s ridden in one maybe twice in her life.  You could always find her on one of our backs, happy as a little lark.  Our red-headed princess, who is so wonderfully close to her brother and sister.  Yes, she has her moments to be sure, but her spirit has always been so incredibly gentle.  She is our artist with the amazing imagination.  And now she is a big girl.  The dimples in her hands are all but gone, her baby chub turning into longer limbs.  Her smile just melts our hearts.  She is funny, and is an excellent joke teller!  Yesterday was her big party, the biggest one for her to date as she’s never really want much of a fuss made over her.  But this year she wanted to mark the occasion with a blow out!  After all the food was eaten, all the kids sleepily went home and sister was even in bed, Xiola sat up with Jason and I creating with her new play dough, new stuffed horse on her lap and a look that of such contentment that it brought tears to my eyes.  I didn’t take a photo, we barely dared to breath as we watched our littlest turning into a big girl right before our eyes.  The adventure with her and her sister is ever so much fun, and we are looking forward to what the next 5 years will bring…if only we could slow it down just a little.

My sister and I (me in the back), with our little ones still cooking.  This was the month before Xi was born.
Two months shy of her First birthday.
 Birthday number 2.
So proud of her new skateboarding gear on her Third birthday.  She loves riding the ramp with Daddy.
Her love of horses was fully ingrained by the time she reached her Fourth birthday.
This morning…my big girl.
Happy Birthday Xiola!!  You bring joy to everyone you meet.  We love you beyond words.  Thank you for choosing us….xoxox.
Peace!
