Simple Sewing

                                      acd40b1a-ed0b-40ca-96f4-af4d70c8797f

I am so excited to have received this book, “Simple Sewing with Lola Nova”  By Alexandra Smith.  If you haven’t seen her blog, please visit it, Lola Nova.  I love her ideas and have been following her for years.  So I am kind of late to the party with her book!  It was published in 2012…yeah….very late!  But better late than never!  She has so many beautiful designs and I am sure I will make my way through each one at some point in time.

For my handmade holiday gift to my little grandson, Emmet, I will be making this Wee Bunny.  I love how sweet his little face is.

I really believe in simpler toys for babies, it sparks their imagination if everything isn’t done for them!  And in a world of bells and whistles and tablets and smart phones, something like this is a breath of fresh air.  Whatever happened to the days of pots and pans as toys?  Now toys do it all for you.  My kids learned to read by opening a book, not pressing a button….but I digress on my original intent for this post.  I will save the soap box for a later date.  Right now it’s about this book!
So many beautiful things to make….Thanks Alexandra for the gift of your talent!

What are your handmade holiday plans?

Pie Goodness – A Brief History

“If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.”  Carl Sagan

“Pie is a symbol of something bigger than Mom and her way with desserts.”  Pasquale Le Draqulec

“Pie is the food of the heroic.  No pie eating nation can ever be vanquished.”  NY Times

Pie…that fantastic dessert, or snack, or breakfast, or sometimes even dinner!  Who doesn’t love pie?!  My grandmother always said that when she and my grandfather were first married, he always requested a fresh pie at home in case he brought home friends.  She loved making pies.

Pies became more popular in American culture around the time my grandmother was a young newlywed, but the origin of the pie is much much earlier than that.  They say they possibly came from the Greeks as a way to preserve meat on vast voyages.  But the Romans are the first to document actual recipes, using mainly meats but also seafood as well.

In medieval England, they were called pyes, and instead of being predominantly sweet, they too were most often filled with meat – beef, lamb, wild duck and magpie pigeon – spiced with pepper, currants or dates.  Because of their crusty tops, pyes acted as a way to preserve meats in the cold winter months.  These are the pies the Pilgrims brought with them to the New World.  As the colonies expanded, the use of local edibles into pies expanded, including sweet fruits.  But it wasn’t until the early 1900’s that the explosion of recipes occured, going from about 8 sweet pie recipes published in the late 1800’s to over 64 by 1947.

The popularity of Apple Pie is thought to have come about during the WW2 when artist Montgomery Flagg designed the famous Uncle Sam “I want you” posters.  His work became popular due to this and some of his works included American housewives baking….yes, apple pies!   Thus the image and symbol of being “as American as apple pie” seems to have been born.

We love pie here at AmLo Farms.  And Lola has become quite the pie baker.  She has been raising money for a trip she wants to take this summer, and has been baking pies for sale.  Yesterday she did 12!  She might be trying to reintroduce the popularity of pie back into our community…I highly suspect this is her ultimate goal…;)  She even started a small blog, Pies For Days!.  She plans on documenting her adventures into the world of pie baking.   I dare say, she is quite good at it too.

Now you have to excuse me, I am going to go have a piece of pie with coffee….care to join me?

Peace,

Cat

My Love Of Oils Runneth Over

Oh boy!! Young Living has done it again and BIG this time!! Look at these promos! Lavender, L’Briante’ Lip Gloss, Black Pepper AND Everyday Oils Collection! That’s 12 oils they are giving away this month…what?! Yes! I am pretty sure that’s the bargain of the year, not to mention that Young Living has never done anything like this, and they do some pretty great things for all of us. So what’s stopping you? Take advantage of this and set yourself up for the start of an amazing year with all the supplies you need! Get your start with the Premium Starter Kit and add on some other amazing products and get all these FREE!

And now, the first oil in our promo series for December, Lavender!

The benefits of Lavender oil include relaxation, easing stress and more. Its balancing properties make it gentle enough to use on dogs, horses and cats. My girls love it in their sleepy time blends and we will never leave home without it for any ouch moments!

Did you know that researchers at University of Miami found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation?

Did you know that a 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that lavender reduced mental stress and increased alertness?

The French scientist René Gattefossé was among the first to re-discover lavender in the early 1900’s. And has been one of the most popular oils ever since that time. But there are inferior plants and synthetic blends that try to pass as pure Lavender, so be careful! This is why I only trust Young Living. Their Lavender is grown on their farm in  Mona, UT and St. Maries, ID and nurtured almost as much as we do our own children. Because it is very nurtured and taken care of, it can be compared to a reserve wine or an aged Anejo Rum. I love its deep rich aroma and I promise you will be drawn to it immediately!

The ORAC value is 360 µTE/100g, and the species used is Lavandula angustifolia. Remember, knowing this and how it’s grown can make the difference between a true Lavender oil and those that are altered or just smell like Lavender.

All animals including cats can use this oil! Have your animals smell it directly from the bottle or place a drop or two in your palm, then smell. Or place a drop in your palm and pet head to toe.

Google all the benefits of this amazing oil and see for yourself why you need this in your wellness cabinet!! And your purse, bag, car, etc…

My Girls

My girls…..What magical creatures these two are.  So different and yet so similar.  They fight like cats and dogs, but will always defend the other above all other threats.  They have different interests and dreams, different skills and motivations.  And even though they won’t always admit it, they are each others biggest fan.  Individuals, creative, free thinking, and I just know they will do great things with their lives.  Even when they are being annoying and self centered…LOL  They are amazing creatures and I am so incredibly grateful for the gift of being their Mom and having the opportunity to watch and learn from these remarkable young women.   Thank you Lola and Xiola…..you both are everything I could have ever asked for and much much more……

(with their brother….who is their hero)
