Projects Everywhere!

So this weekend was a big one for all of us.  The girls went to Grandma and Papa’s for the weekend, first time away for an entire weekend for Xiola.  They had a blast!

While they were gone, J and I got to work finishing up some major house projects.  I mentioned re-doing the girls room.  Well it is painted and re-organized…and man it feels good in there now!  Their room before was a really wierd shade of blue that showed every smudge and finger mark, not to mention crayon.  There is a loft in the room that we left alone as that is Lola’s space and we gave her free range up there with the drawing.  So the ceiling and walls are mini masterpieces.  It’s very Frank Zappa of us, I know..haah!  When people come to visit they sign the wall, so the girls have all these autographs, pictures and symbols drawn up there to remember by.  It’s a fun little space.

But the rest of the room is very small.  We want to get them bunks but have to wait on those for a bit.  They do have a trundle bed, so that works out.  The space itself is so small though that it has been difficult trying to figure out what goes where.  Not to mention all the little things that make their way into there.  So while the girls were gone, Mama got out the donation box and consolidated.  They now have two wicker baskets in the little cabinet under the loft stairs that hold blocks in one and toys in the other.  Another basket is used for playsilks and a wooden baby bed for all their babies.  They have their wood stove and a bookshelf along with Xi’s dresser (Lola’s is in the closet).  It works!  I like the room because it now has some character and is so pared down and organized that it isn’t overwhelming anymore.  I almost don’t want to hang anything else on the walls!

They have a pocket door that we are going to take off and paint with chalkboard paint on the inside, and the little wall next to that will have cork board so they can hang their drawings without taping them all over the walls….in every room….and on every door….can you see a theme here?  Hah!

So that’s the long explanation for their room….unfortunately I don’t have any “before” pictures as I didn’t think about taking them in my zeal to get the room done.  But here are the after:

With the trundle out.
The door here leads to another room that is more of a playroom.  It houses the ferrets and a few toys but not much is in there at the moment.

The next major project that we did was the living room.  At one time that room had been a bedroom, so had a closet and an exterior door.  When the original owners of this house added on the dining room, they put in another exterior door, right next to the first one.  Didn’t make sense to us, but it was a better front door that the first one, so we never used the one leading into the living room.  Both the closet and that door however made that space tiny.  In order to get more natural light, we had to open the door and that made the room feel even smaller.  So we did what any DIYer would do, we knocked out the closet and changed the door to a window!

We have friends down the street who have remodel many a home, so she and I decided to take on the task.  We spent a Saturday and knocked down the closet and ripped out the door.  The men showed up part way through and another neighbor so we made a party of it and by that night had a new wall, window and ceiling where the closet had been.  After a couple weeks of mudding and texturing, thanks to our good friend down the street (thank you Scotty!), we were ready for paint and completing the transformation.

Here are the before pictures:

The nemesis of a closet.

You can see how much space this thing took up.  And the wierd other door when opened up to let light in just made the room shrink even more.

Ugh…

Well, I got it…the cold that has been making the rounds. Ugh. I’ll be back to our regularly scheduled program once the achiness leaves my bones. I had plans to get my seeds started today, but that will have to wait until later in the week as the weather has decided to allow the sun, but also freezing cold air. Too cold for these bones today.

See you in a few days, hopefully earlier….

Peace!

Happy New Year

As 2009 draws to a close, I can’t help but reflect on not only this past year, but past decade.  So many things have happened in my world – so much emotion on all levels.  I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world, even the hard times as those helped me continue to grow and follow this path life has laid out for me.  Some of the hard times have brought new loving members to my family such as my son’s step-mother who I just adore.  Alot of people find it odd that I can be so close to my ex’s wife, but she is truly a jewel and over these years I have grown so close to her.  It’s good..:)  I love you A.

This last decade brought me the loves of my life: my darling J, my gorgeous girls and my amazing grandson.  I’ve lived in Hawaii, Humboldt County (California) and Texas…all exotics in different ways.  I’ve traveled the Western half of the U.S., made amazing new friends and reconnected with some extremely important old ones.  I quit smoking in 2001, swam with a shark on the coral reefs off the Big Island, welcomed the most amazing nieces and nephews to my life.  I’ve gained the best brother in laws in the world, as well as equally wonderful sister in laws.  I’ve become a gardener, knitter, and all around earth mother type.  I’ve struggled with and conquered illnesses, depressions, financial rocky times, homelessness, and spiritual crisis’.  We bought a house and are making it a home.  We have so much love in our world that it gets overwhelming at times, and we are always grateful.

These just touch upon the ups and downs in our world, the most important things are we are still here and have so much gratitude to everyone around us.

To my wonderful in-laws, I love you both more than you will ever know…thank you for the wonderful ride so far!  You are truly inspirations…

To all my brother in laws, I will always be grateful for your presence in my sisters lives.  They are amazing women and you are amazing men…I love you all from the bottom of my heart.

To my sister in laws, some of the most beautiful women on the planet…I love you ladies, thank you for all your love and constant inspirations.

To my brother, what can I say bro?  You are part of my heart and I love you so much.  I couldn’t have asked for a better bro…

To my sisters, oh you beautiful women!!  You guys are my heart and soul…I could not have gotten through this lifetime without each and every one of you.

To my mom and dad…thank you so much for your constant love and support.  You really are the best and I’m so proud that you are mine!  I love you.

To my children…the greatest loves of my life.  Each one of you have been the most amazing teachers a girl could ever have.  I am always here for you no matter what…you are my true loves.

To my grandson…your life is just beginning and I couldn’t be more honored to be a part of it.  You are one of the most amazing creatures on the planet and I know you will grow to do great things…I love you my darling little man.

And to the most amazing friends anyone could ever ask for…you all have seen me through life and never let go.  I am forever blessed for my extended family…I love you all and look forward to our next decade together both here and far….

And finally to my wonderful J…you are love, pure and simple.  I can’t imagine my life without you…here’s to another 50 New Year’s Eve’s together…

Happy New Year everyone…I do believe 2010 is going to be a magical ride and I am so looking forward to what life will bring!  Peace!

Quick Update

The holidays were so magical for the girls this year.  They got to spend special holiday time with both sets of grandparents as well as cousins.  They didn’t get a pile of presents, but rather a few thoughtfully put together packages that are just perfect.  They couldn’t be happier.  I will have pictures and more to write about this week, my main computer that I use is down due to a broken router.  The new router will arrive this week and then I’ll be back in my zone.  Until then I’m on J’s computer downstairs, so have no pictures uploaded here.  Soon my peeps, soon.

I did end up being very ill however in the days leading up to Christmas.  Bacterial ear infection that is still going on, time for stronger antibiotics.  The pain has subsided, however the deafness in my right ear is quite frustrating.  Try going to the grocery store (with all it’s noises and commotion) with two little chatter boxes and no hearing on one side, it’s enough to drive a person mad.  hah!  So for now I am banned from going out in the cold unless I’ve fully covered my head and ear, and will be starting super strong antibiotics as well.  My hearing should return, and since there hasn’t been any fevers for over a week, then I should recover quickly with these meds.

Besides the gimpy ear, all has been truly lovely and magical this holiday.  I hope all of your’s was just as wonderful and I look forward to sharing the New Year with everyone!

Happy New Year!  Peace!

Happy Autumn!

What a great way to celebrate the first official day of Autumn, with rain! We got 2 inches last night and it’s been softly falling all day since. The temperatures are in the 70’s and I finally broke out the knitting. Yes, I should be working on projects for Xi’s birthday this weekend, but it’s hard to do with the other kids around and I can start and stop with knitting pretty easily. Tonight you will find me in front of the sewing machine however. I have a couple ideas I really want to work on for her, plus her birthday crown (I’m determined to do one this year come hell or high water…preferably high water as the lake needs it! hah!)

So for now, Happy Autumn to you all!

Peace!

The front bed that we worked on a couple weeks ago. The far side was where it needed polishing up after we cut back the huge rose “tree” that grows in there. It’s enjoying the rain very much!
