New Life On The Farm

On Saturday the girls and I went to our local feedstore, Paleface Feed, to get feed and participate in an Easter egg hunt they were holding for the kids. The girls had a blast scrambling around, looking for eggs. And I have to say, that group of kids were some of the most polite. All of them were giving eggs to the little kids who couldn’t find them fast enough, making sure that everyone had some in their buckets. Some of the eggs had candy inside along with coupons. This is what the girls got with their coupons:

We also traded one of the Showgirls for this handsome fellow:

Jason has named him Upgraydd…If you’ve ever seen the movie, Idiocracy, you’ll get the name. HA!

Springtime!

So you probably noticed a bit of a change around here. I decided with the evidence of Spring’s residency, to brighten things up. We are having a clear, warm, gorgeous day! Here is evidence of all the color and newness that is popping up on our little farm. Enjoy and happy Spring!

New Chickens, New Adventure

So…our neighbor came over with a friend of her’s the other day. Her friend’s daughter raised chickens for 4H and had to get rid of her flock to make room for the new ones. We offered to take 6 off their hands, but broke the cardinal rule by not asking what type they had. All we said was we wanted hens only. Well they showed up yesterday and guess what? They are broilers! That’s right folks, in another 6 weeks they won’t be good eatin’, so guess what we get to do? Right again! We get to process 6 chickens..yikes! We’ve never done this before, so hence the new adventure. Haha! What we’ve learned about broilers are, they usually don’t live past age 1 and grow so big that their little legs can’t support their weight. 🙁 Nervous you ask? Oh quite! Lola is of course thrilled..she says she loves chicken! Haha! Life of a farm girl, no matter how small the farm is…;)

Winter Doesn’t Have To Be Dreary…

My violets are starting to really bloom with this cold weather we’ve been having. These particular bunch have been in this neighborhood for over 20 years, having been transplanted from another neighbor’s house several years ago. They are just lovely and remind me of old fashion times..:)

Yaupon berries had a flash of scarlet to the landscape. I find their brilliance a welcome relief to the otherwise bare trees around.

Ah the beautiful Kubrah. She’s getting so big, and so spoiled! With the warmer weather, she’s been enjoying some much needed sunshine with her other furry friends, and tonight will be her first night out in the pen. She’s getting a little too used to the kitchen rug in front of the sink. Haha!

Mama June is doing great! She’s starting to mellow out more and more with the milking and is tolerating Kubrah much better. She’s a sweetheart…:)

Can’t forget Mongo! He’s getting big as well and is starting to look at Kubrah with that “Oo La La!” look in his eye. (Sorry dude, you are destined to be a pet, not a breeder.) He’s got such a killer personality though and is super sweet. He’s turning into a really great pet. 🙂

MMMMMM…fresh goat milk, can’t beat it!

My little pixie!

A tired, but happy mom!

Peace!

Goat Milking

So, we milked June for the first time today. What an ordeal! She is not used to this, so was not happy to be restrained, but she calmed down alot when she realized she was getting flax/coconut chips at the same time. HA! Jason held her horns and stood over her locking her hips in with his legs. She didn’t fight at all once we started milking. We didn’t go for the big milk session as we are trying to ease her into it, but we did get a half glass full – and let me tell you, it’s the best milk I’ve ever tasted! So sweet and creamy. I think once June is used to it she’ll realize it’s not so bad…and we’ll start having yummy goat milk and cheese sooner now, rather than later!

Introducing Kubrah!

Our newest baby. We swapped one of the baby boys for her on Saturday. June was NOT pleased at all. Poor thing. She refuses to accept this little girl, so Kubrah is a house goat for right now. HAHA! She is the sweetest thing…LOVES her bottle and is so snuggly! We are really happy with her. Jason actually took her for a quick walk on her leash! We are introducing her slowly to June everyday in hopes that June will soon be alright with her. Mongo loves her, but June just goes crazy when the two babies are playing outside the pen. And I get to start milking June in the next week! Oh the joy! HAHA!

For now, just enjoy our new baby girl.

My mother-in-law is in-love!
