William White and the Gen X Train

If you are within a certain age group, and happen to be on TikTok, you have most likely heard of this phenomenon going through the internet the last couple of weeks. That phenomenon is a 21 year old boy/man named William White. His charming lip singing of oldies, the smile and charisma, and yes, that eye roll when he seems to be crooning “Mandy” straight to each of us, has got over a million women in a tizzy! But it’s not as creepy as it sounds.

The joke is that TikTok is now CougarTok, implying that all us women have one thought in mind when we see William White on our FYP pages. While there may be that element, I am not judging, the reality is that’s not true for the majority of us. Most of these women know they are old enough to be his mother. He even calls them his Mama Bears. And while he is charming and very attractive, it’s not a sexualized hype that is heating up. This young man has taken all us Gen X women on a trip back in time. A trip to a place where things seemed simpler, even if they weren’t. A time where a cute boy on the cover of a magazine could make us smile and dream of what possibly could be. A time when we could daydream about someone as cute as this singing straight into our hearts and taking away the pain many of us were actually living with.

Gen X is the generation born between the years 1965 and 1980, roughly. We were born during war, sexual revolution and the birth of feminism. Society had learned that rock and roll was here to stay and the counter culture was in full swing. Times were turbulent, exciting, scary and uncertain. We were the generation born from fire.

Most of our parents came from the ideology that if you can’t see it, it didn’t happen. So while the world was opening up in many ways socially, it also was keeping its darkness and secrets locked up tight. For most of us young girls, this was a time of trauma. Don’t ask, don’t tell. That’s what we learned.

As teenagers, music was changing fast. We saw the birth of disco, punk and Teen Beat magazine. I remember the first video on MTV and the Brat Pack were everywhere. So were many of our traumas. Many of us were taken advantage of, abused and were latch key kids, abandoned while parents worked or partied. Gen X is a feral generation. We did the best we could with raising each other. For many of us, singers such as Rick Springfield and Shaun Cassidy, movie stars like Rob Lowe and the rest of the Brat Pack boys became our fantasy boyfriends. With them, we could daydream of better days. We could dream of romances that were more wholesome and where we were truly loved. We knew these were fantasies, but for those brief moments we could escape whatever pain we were living with. For those brief moments we could listen to them sing and pretend we were ok. Those were cherished moments in this Gen X’s life.

Fast forward 40+ years and many of us are mothers and even grandmothers. Most have had at least 2 marriages and we are doing the best we can to make sure our sons and daughters don’t have to face what we did. Many of us still hold on to secrets and fears. We have thrown ourselves into marriage, children, careers and life looking for that feeling of contentment. Don’t get me wrong, most of us love our families. I wouldn’t change anything about my life, even with all the trauma and confusion. But for many, the longing for simple love has been replaced with keeping busy.

Enter William White aka @whiteyy18. He isn’t new to TikTok. But Memorial Day weekend changed everything. We became Mandy with one eye roll and a wink. All of a sudden we were transported back in time. We started feeling emotions many had forgotten about. We became mesmerized. And his follow count skyrocketed as duet after duet ran through the app.

He doesn’t lip sing particularly well, sometimes he obviously doesn’t know the lyrics, but he has charm and this makes him even more appealing. He is signed with Mode Models in Canada, where he is from. He isn’t arrogant however. He includes his Mama Bears in his new found fame and he continues to give his followers a place where we can go back to the feelings of possibilities. It’s innocent and flirty and a wave that he has pulled us into. Many say they feel seen, they feel appreciated and feel like they did when we were kids and happy in our daydreams. And this young man knows exactly what he is doing and how it’s affecting others.

William’s lives are consistently filled with gratitude. His genuine excitement to make us happy is adorable, and he is always talking about this wave as everyone’s and not just his alone. He also loves his family and gives them credit and respect. He is a breath of fresh air in a world that has over-sexualized almost everything. He has brought over a million women together from every background and political map and created a community. And it all happened with a wink and a smile – and that eye roll – on an app that became a safe haven during Covid for so many Gen Xers. And friends, when women band together we are a force to be reckoned with.

But I cannot press publish on this article without acknowledging the fact that Mr. White’s charm doesn’t just end with Gen X women. It has crossed over to the men as well who see him and appreciate him. It has crossed over into the LGBTQ community with video after video of how he has hypnotized them as well. He doesn’t discriminate. He is helping all of us smile a little brighter.

So William White, this is a huge thank you. Thank you for seeing us. Thank you for caring. Thank you for helping us remember what hope can feel like. Thank you for reminding us we are more than we might have come to believe. And thank you for singing straight to our hearts.

Oh Mandy

Freedom From Fear

There are things we tell ourselves.   That we are not good enough.  That we are not strong enough.   We are not pretty enough.   We just don’t have what it takes.   We all know those voices.  They creep in at some point in our lives and change who we are depending on how long they stick around.   Sometimes right down to our very DNA until those thoughts and voices are just part of us, like a limb.

For some of us, those can be a lifetime of inner doubts and ridicule.   They lead us down dark alleys, both figuratively and literally at times.  We make choices based on fear or apathy for our own selves.   And that fear can sometimes tell us it’s someone else’s fault, so we start developing resentments and sometimes fall into victim thinking.   It is too much for us to be responsible for, too overwhelming.   Some of us are silent in this and some of us will tell anyone who will listen.   It becomes a security blanket or shield.  It’s something we know and so to just push it away can be even scarier than staying in the muck and dis-ease of our thoughts.

“What if we let it go and try to heal and things just get worse?   How much more can I take?  I think I will just stay here and guard my sadness.  I will just pretend to smile and people will like me.   I will say yes, all the time so no one gets mad at me.   I can keep all these balls in the air.   Until one drops.   Then look at me, I knew I would fail.  How can I hide my shame and guilt and fear?   I will retreat.   Lick my wounds and pretend it didn’t happen.   I will clutch my blanket tighter.  Smile, they won’t notice if you keep smiling.”  It’s exhausting.

Sometimes, especially for a lot of women, our weaknesses are taken advantage of.   These awful moments can plunge us further into the darkness.     The voices tell us we deserved it.  We just are not good enough.   And we learn to cope, sometimes with unhealthy lifestyle choices whether it be alcohol, food, drugs, shopping, etc.  Sometimes we just cling onto other wounded souls and try to glean some comfort.  Unfortunately, their own dis-ease prohibits them from comforting us for too long.  And the cycle continues.   Resentment, fear, self doubt.  You get the picture.  It gets ugly.

This is reality for so many in this world.   This was my reality for years and years, most of my life really.  My fear was my security and I clung to it like a drowning person clutching a rock.   Facing all of it has been incredibly scary.   There have been times I was sure I wasn’t able to breath.   But breath I did, and the most wonderful things started happening.  It’s been incredibly freeing.   I don’t have to be that victim.   I don’t have to make choices based on my own fear anymore.  I can actually be happy and mean it!  What?!

A little over 4 years ago I wasn’t sure this was possible for me.   I didn’t know that I could step into the light.   But then I found my community.   Like a scared animal, I slowly crept out of my cave and into the arms of these souls who did not coddle me, but who instead have guided me to seeing a brighter day.

They answer the phone when I call and they listen, and then they help me take action.   They don’t tease me or make me feel small.  Their love and experience lifts me up when I am feeling weak and make my own light shine even brighter when I am feeling strong.   They know who they are.   They are men and women who have made different choices.  Healthier choices.   They guide me and help me guide others.  They help me find my faith, find my trust and find God.   And they allow me to fall down sometimes, without judgement, hands outstretched to help me back up again.   They teach me to be of service.   And we laugh, great joyful belly laughs.  Have you ever done that??   Just laughed until you cried and then just kept laughing some more??   It is so wonderful!

And I found these friends both in my daily life and in my business life.  The two have melted into one and it’s truly a gift.   All these souls filling my heart with love and light and the beauty of God.  I never knew.   ❤️

So now, I can fall down.   And yes it sometimes hurts.  And yes, there are moments I don’t feel like standing back up.  And every so often those voices try to whisper.   But I have a better security blanket now.   Something much stronger and more real than I could imagine.   And I have a community to help me when I struggle.   And most importantly, I have God so am never truly alone.

“Fear is only an illusion. It is the illusion that creates the feeling of separateness – the false sense of isolation that exists only in our imagination.”  Jeraldine Saunders

Good Vibes Only

I recently read this Forbes article. It is an interview with author and business leader, Mark Sanborn. He wrote a book called, “You Don’t Need a Title to Be a Leader.” Which I plan on picking up! Part of this interview really spoke to me and I wanted to share what inspired me with you all.

August is traditionally been a super slow month in network marketing. Every August since I started as a network marketing leader, I have heard how much worse it is than previous years. And I bought into that way of thinking up until a couple years ago. Now, I would go out on a limb and say that’s absolutely false. When we are feeling uninspired, we tend to come from a negative perspective. This HAS to be the worse August ever! It’s the only explanation why my business isn’t growing, why my people are quiet, why I am failing!

But that’s not the truth. The truth is, after a full summer with everyone busy, and back to school stress hitting most families, we become disillusioned with a lot. We back up and back off. And we decide that our business must be going backwards. I have a little secret to tell you though, it’s not your business that is going backwards, it’s your thinking. It can all be turned around!

And all you have to do is change your perspective. Maybe sales are down, then it’s a great time to work on personal growth! Read your books, reach out to friends and those who inspire you with just something simple like “I am thinking about you and hoping you are having a great day!” Offer to fill in a gap in your group if you see it. Start making plans for your holidays. Reach out to someone you might have heard something inspiring from and ask them if they have a moment to chat. Don’t expect others to fix your situation, rather look to them to inspire you. Try something new. 😉. The magic in all this is when we stop looking at the negative and start focusing on positives, things really do turn around!! I know this from personal experience!

“In tough times you need both information and inspiration. Information is essential to understand what’s going on. Some say, “Don’t read the news. It’s only negative.” That is shortsighted advice. If there is news of an upcoming storm you need to know so you can prepare. Ignoring it won’t make the storm go away. We all need to face reality.

We also need to be inspired by focusing on what we can do to respond successfully. Neuroscience has shown that we aren’t just happy because we are successful, but we’re successful because we’re happy. Focusing more on the good than the bad, focusing on what we have rather than what we don’t have – these predispose us to doing better and achieving our goals.

I like to offer people hope, which I define as having something new to try and being willing to try it. There is no hopeless situation if you can find something different to try and you are willing to act on the idea. Keep searching for new solutions and don’t let lack of past success in dealing with a problem trick you into thinking there’s nothing you can do.” – Mark Sanborn

The Well Village

Definition of “community” for this purpose –

• Self-organized network of people with common agenda, cause, or interest, who collaborate by sharing ideas, information, and other resources. Virtual communities consist of participants in online discussions on topics of mutual concern, or of those who frequent certain websites.

A community usually has a family feel to it. It is a village where everyone provides their strengths to accomplish what is needed. In business, this is a good thing because these are the people you will spend the majority of your time with if you go into an office. If you are online you want to have that community support as well. The word “community” is one of my favorite words. I have spent most of my life gathering my community of friends and now I have finally found that crossing over into my business.

On February 1, 2018, I co- founded the group, The Well Village with my partner in crime, Lisa Lopez. Over the last few months we have seen our share of growing pains and family “discussions” but we also have developed an amazing group of constant support and friendships. And our village continues to grow. In this business, a person can tend to feel lost and alone as there is no office, no real boss, no place you have to be unless you schedule something. Being a part of The Well Village gives us a place and a support system. We don’t have to do this business alone. We have resources at our fingertips, constant support for the days we celebrate and the days we are feeling frustrated. We help each other grow both professionally and personally. We have fun!

We are 6 months old as The Well Village, although have been doing this business for close to 4 years now, and I am so excited to see where this next year takes us! We are looking at retiring members, we are bringing dad’s and husbands home full time, people are paying off debt and taking stress off their plates. I am watching healthy lifestyle changes that are benefiting families and supporting their wellness. People are actually seeing their doctors less and feeling better than ever. We are continuing to grow strong and solid and we get to celebrate each other’s successes in all areas of life.

We have a thriving business community AND a very active wellness group – The Well Village Discussion. We would love to invite you to our community as well. The wellness group is absolutely FREE and we talk about all areas of wellness for all the stages of our lives. We have professional nurses, nutritionists, yoga instructors, massage therapists and physical therapists just to name a few! We have amazing online classes and support, all FREE!

To join the business community is something special. Where else can you invest $160 and start a full on business working with people who love to help others, and be investing in your own health and wellness??!! Starting today until September 1, you can invest and get $20 back in credit on your account as well! If you just want to make a couple hundred extra dollars a month or start a whole new career path, the choice is your’s! And you don’t have to be a salesperson or sign off on your first born. I promise!!! Our company has been around for almost 30 years and is going no where. And you see the amazing perks I post!

So let me know if you want to check out our Wellness group for free or if you want to dive in and invest in your health with a kit! And if you don’t want to do the business but just want the benefits, that’s fine too!!!!!

We welcome you to the village and would love to share our space with you!  Just leave me a comment or contact me through email (or form here under contact tab) with any questions!

High School Marching Band

Friday night was the pinning ceremony for our daughter.  She is in her high school marching band as a clarinet player.  What a wonderful evening!   Hearing the music, and seeing the kids all doing so amazingly well is so good for the heart.  I firmly believe that kids in activities such as this really helps them achieve success later on.  They have a built in family at school and a place to feel a part of.  Plus, music is so awesome to know how to play!   It’s amazing the things it does for the brain.

This year the band band is doing the show Project Stravinsky.   It’s a telling of the friendship between designer Coco Chanel and the composer, Stravinsky.  It is said when they met they both immediately inspired the other.  Before long, both their careers were kicking up into high gear.   The music is beautiful and the show was amazing.

These kids have been at it for a month and they are already performing at an amazing level!  Looking forward to competition season!

Austin Zoo Day

Last week we had the privilege of visiting the Austin Zoo.  This is a beautiful facility focused on animal rescue and rehabilitation.  The animals are obviously well cared for and loved.  There several scheduled zoo keeper talks throughout the day and very well maintained feeding area as well.

This is zoo is geared more towards the toddler and younger child age group and the facility is set up so kids have plenty of space to run around and easy, and safe, access to all the animals.  This is one of Emmet’s and my favorite outings.   We usually pack a lunch and stay several hours.  It’s a lovely and peaceful environment.

The Zoo is starting up a couple exciting new programs that will actually benefit up to age 13!

Introducing: Homeschool Nature Series & Winter Workshop

Two new education programs are coming to Austin Zoo!

The Homeschool Nature Series will have kids learning about biology and participating in exciting labs! Programs are designed for kids aged 7-13 years old.

The Winter Workshop is fun for the entire family! Join us this holiday season to make animal treats and human sweets!. Come visit us!
For More Information visit the Austin Zoo website!

We highly recommend the zoo for a fun afternoon!

The Perpetual You

About a year ago I stumbled across a collaborative group through Instagram.  Lee Lee Thompson had commented on one of my photos and as I looked over her feed I became curious about her group, The Perpetual You.  What I discovered was this was a collaborative group of women who were putting together an online magazine along with website and blog that is all woman focused.  I inquired about submitting an article I had written, The Tree Mamas.  Lee Lee was very enthusiastic about me posting this to the blog and a friendship was born.

Since then I have written more for the blog, photographed the essential oils for a monthly column, was one of the quarterly panelists offering my perspective on thematic questions for a monthly column in the magazine, and now I am the book photographer for the recommendations section.  I love working with these women!  We come from all walks of life and it’s a wonderful feeling to support and be supported.  An honest collaboration of ideas and gifts to create something so beautiful and honest.  I am so grateful Lee Lee commented on that long ago photo!

Something cool happened this month with our little collaboration.  We are now in print!  That’s right, we are a full fledged, in print, monthly publication!  And let me tell you, it’s even more beautiful that I expected.  To be a part of something from the ground up is an honor and to share it with you all is a delight!

Check out our subscription information.  I promise you won’t be disappointed.  As women, especially in the world today, we need to support each other and raise each other up.  Would love to see you all a part of this new venture.  You are always welcome…

Estes Rockets Review

IMG_20160505_154349

At the beginning of summer, we were given the opportunity to try out some really fun air rockets from Estes Rockets.  The company sent us three of their most popular, The Sonic Boom, the Mini Blaster and the Whirlwind.  The kids were thrilled, and so were a few adults when we told them what had arrived, so on Mother’s Day we all congregated in a field to check these rockets out.

One of our friends actually had Estes Rockets with the engines, so he added those to the mix and for the next 2 hours we all were kids again!  What fun these rockets are!  The air rockets were simple enough that even the littlest of kids could participate, but went so high into the air that the adults were just as amazed!  I think our favorite was the Whirlwind Rocket!

The engine rockets were thrilling!  I had no idea how much fun and how high these little rockets can fly!  Simple to use, and the rockets themselves are reusable, so all you need to replace are the engines and fuses.

Thank you Estes Rockets for a serious good time and allowing us adults to feel like kids once again!  I highly recommend everyone trying these!  Who doesn’t like being a bunch of kids in a field sometimes?!

Tres Lunas Resort Part 2

Morning time.  After an amazing meal and dining experience the evening before, we awoke to a beautiful morning full of promise.  I was already trying to push away the feeling of sadness at having to leave this day, I promised myself I would savor every last moment.  Oh what a morning awaited us and I had no idea that the experience there would flourish even more.

We were warned that breakfast would be hearty.  That the morning meal is indeed a true feast.  We were not disappointed!

When we walked into the main room, the smell of fresh coffee greeted us and the the table was set and ready for us to be seated.  Craig came out with fresh squeezed orange juice and asked us if we could spare some time after eating so we could all chat.  I was looking forward to that!  Within moments he sat before us a beautiful bowl of fresh fruit, yogurt and homemade granola which was followed by eggs cooked to our taste, homemade hashbrowns, bacon and a small skillet of biscuits.  The condiments were just as beautiful as the meal!  We ate until we couldn’t take another bite and after freshening our coffee, Carol came and sat down with us.  This is honestly when the entire experience really began I realized later.

IMG_2241

Carol is a breath of fresh air.  She has this amazingly positive aura about her and her smile just lights up the room.  Craig is a gracious and generous host who makes you laugh and feel at ease immediately.  That is a gift!  We had dozens of questions about how they got started, the history of the property and the resort itself.  Both Carol and Craig have backgrounds in the hospitality business.   Craig has worked for a few gourmet food companies and Carol is an amazing chef having taken classes with some of the top chefs in the world.  When they met, they dreamed of running their own establishment.  They had a few other bed and breakfast establishments before finding this magical piece of property.   The story is that Craig found this and within 30 minutes made an offer.  He knew right away this was the place they had to have.   Both are Hill Country proud and appreciate the history of the area, especially this area.  The original house that was on the foundation the resort now resides upon was a 2 story ranch house that had been damaged in a tornado at one point.  It sat on 100’s of acres that had been divided up by the family over the years.  The moment they saw the views and felt the spirit of the land, they knew this was the place.  It was a stretch with all the renovations they needed to make, basically tearing down the structure to the foundation and starting over.  But their dream was to create a retreat.  A magical place where people could come and feel their spirit renewed.  They want people to experience what they do, to offer them the ultimate in care and are obviously so grateful to be where they are.  It shows on their faces and in their voices.  There is an amazing amount of warmth and love that come from this couple.  It took my breath away to be honest.  So much Peace and gratitude lives in this home.

IMG_2242      IMG_2243       IMG_2246_1

As I mentioned in the first article, the resort caters to weddings and retreats (I will be doing a feature on this for the last installment).  One area that I fell in love with is the yoga patio.  Carol has so much experience in spiritual practices, traveling around the globe to learn from the masters.  She is truly a student of the spirit and freely gives all that she has been taught.  She created a place where yoga enthusiasts can come and practice their craft surrounded by this spirit of peace.  Everything planned to help with the hot Texas sun, to create a sacred space,  all geared towards maximum comfort and serenity.  Listening to her share her stories, I got goosebumps and a bit teary eyed.   If you go visit her, ask her to share with you.  They are her stories to tell, but I promise they will affect you in a way that you won’t expect.   She wants to share her love for life and the spirit with those who come to Tres Lunas and to help them find a restful and healing place in their lives…even if just for a moment.   And she is doing just that.  I can only imagine the healing she has participated in just by providing such a space.

Our tour continued into their private quarters where I was greeted by beautiful works of art created by friends and Carol herself.  Her mother was an incredible artist and she has a few of her pastels hanging.  One of which was drawn on a piece of brown paper bag while on a picnic in those very same hills decades before.  It was of a beautiful deer found in the Hill Country.  The pastels were so soft and soothing and it looked like you could reach out and feel the softness of that creature.  Carol didn’t know that she would end up finding her home in that same countryside.  What a special gift!

0714161029_HDR

There is Carol’s office which is filled with prayer flags and a massage table, and yes, more beautiful art pieces.  Even their private quarters were designed for maximum serenity!  And I know with a resort you need a good size laundry room, but their’s made me completely envious!  So bright with windows everywhere….perfect place for Carol to paint as the laundry area only took up a portion of the huge room!

Craig’s office is the ultimate of man caves!  Jason loved it!  Craig’s father and grandfather were both Texas lawmen and Craig was able to find an old jail cell that he restructured to fit inside his office as a guest quarters for family or friends!  It’s really awesome!  On the wall behind his desk hangs the head of a huge Longhorn.  Craig told us that someone had given the living animal to Carol as a gift at one time and they loved him!  He was their pet who they truly loved, and when he finally died of natural causes they donated 800 pounds of ground beef to the food bank in Mason, TX and mounted their beloved pet’s head on the wall of Craig’s office.  It is an impressive site!

_MG_2156

We talked for a good 2 hours about life, our backgrounds, our love for nature and art.  Carol and I especially found that we have so many similar feelings about our journeys in life.  I felt like I have always known her.  We all found we had so many things in common and I don’t think any of us wanted to conversation to end.  But as all good stories must wind down, so did our time there.

We left with our arms bearing gifts and our hearts filled with the brightness of new friendships.  I can honestly say we both felt renewed and so relaxed.  It was a true healing experience and one we hope to repeat in the future!  I am so grateful for the opportunity and for the compassion that Carol and Craig show to others.  It’s truly remarkable.  I promise if you make a reservation there, you will honestly be able to leave your cares and worries at the front gate.  Once you drive in, the magic begins and the spirit smiles down upon you.  It is a rarity in life to find a place like that.  I am grateful that we did.
